Edmonds police spent Friday scouring the area around a 7-Eleven store, looking for a man who fatally shot a clerk before dawn, then bolted from the scene.

A customer found the 64-year-old clerk’s body shortly after 5 a.m. Friday in the store off Highway 99, according to statement from the city of Edmonds.

A search for the suspect, with help from canines and officers from Snohomish County, King County and the Washington State Patrol, was fruitless, the city said.

Edmonds police reviewed surveillance video from inside the store and released a still photo of the suspect. The man had his jacket hood up and face covered when he entered the store.

Police also released a four-second clip from one of the store’s video-surveillance cameras and the footage shows a man sprint inside the store with a gun in his hand, leap onto a counter and point the weapon in a two-handed grip at the clerk, who does not appear in the frame.

“There’s maybe nine seconds [of video] after that, then he bolts. It’s fast,” Sgt. Shane Hawley said of the remaining footage of the shooting, which isn’t being made public.

He said it did not appear that anything was stolen from the store and he noted the shooter, believed to be a man in his 20s, was wearing gloves. Police did recover some physical evidence at the scene but Hawley said it will take time for that evidence to be processed.

Asked if he thought the clerk was targeted, Hawley said police don’t know and can’t speak to a possible motive until after a suspect is apprehended.

According to Hawley, a white car he described as a “vehicle of interest” was seen in the area a couple times around the time of the shooting. The photo is grainy but shows what appears to be a four-door sedan.

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office expects to perform an autopsy on the clerk and release his identity on Tuesday, Hawley said.
