A Corvallis, Ore., man is accused of taking a 1-year-old girl from a woman he had met on an online dating app, according to police in Sunnyside, Yakima County.
The child’s mother said she met the 24-year-old man on the MeetMe dating app earlier Friday, and he came to her apartment in the 1300 block of South 11th Street around 10:30 p.m., according to a police affidavit.
The woman said she and the man had a couple drinks, and she took a shower at his request after they had sex, the affidavit said. When she came out of the shower, the man and her daughter were missing, the affidavit said. She ran outside yelling for help and heard the child cry, the affidavit said.
She found the man and her child nearby, and he handed the baby back to her, the affidavit said, but then wrapped his arm around her neck and threatened to kill her if she did not remain quiet.
The man left before officers arrived but later came back to the apartment and was arrested, the affidavit said.
Officers said the man was a registered sex offender in Oregon. He is being held in the Yakima County jail on suspicion of second-degree kidnapping and felony harassment.
Yakima County Superior Court Judge Douglas Federspiel set the man’s bail at $15,000 during a preliminary appearance hearing Tuesday.
