CLE ELUM — A Yakima man died Friday morning when he lost control of his motorcycle as he was westbound on Interstate 90, the Washington State Patrol reported.

Merle R. Nolan, 34, was about four miles east of Cle Elum in the left lane when he left the road at 9:14 a.m., authorities said. A Department of Transportation vehicle was on the right shoulder, but authorities were unsure if its presence had anything to do with the wreck.

Nolan struck an orange construction barrel before the motorcycle encountered loose gravel and dirt on the left shoulder of the road, the state patrol reported. The motorcycle went into the median and struck a tree, and Nolan was ejected.

Nolan was wearing a helmet, authorities said, but died at the scene.
