Seattle police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in the Central District neighborhood that sent a man to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to officials.
Medics took the unidentified man, whose age is unknown, to Harborview Medical Center with gunshot wounds after the incident in the 1900 South block of South Dearborn Street shortly after 1:45 p.m. on Sunday, according to the police department.
The department reported the man, who was armed with knives, was in critical condition and undergoing surgery as of Sunday evening. No officers were injured.
Seattle Police Detective Mark Jamieson said three officers responded to a crisis call that indicated the man was “chasing his partner” while armed with kitchen knives in front of their home. Upon arrival, the officers first contacted the partner, he said, and the suspect was not around. The partner did not suffer injuries.

“While they were speaking with the victim, a few minutes later, the suspect re-emerged, armed with two knives,” Jamieson told reporters Sunday evening. “One officer had to fire their service weapon, striking the suspect several times.”
The area was cordoned off as a crime scene for several hours Sunday.
Jamieson said he did not know where the man was struck, or how many rounds were fired.
Danielle Frantz, 26, who lives nearby, said she heard six gunshots. She’s lived in the neighborhood for four years and said shootings are relatively unusual there.
“It’s not like a great neighborhood, there are muggings, but not usually shootings,” she said.
Pierce Murphy, the civilian director of the Seattle Police Department’s Office of Professional Accountability, said he responded to the scene as per OPA protocol for officer-involved shootings.
He said the department’s Force Investigations Team, which investigates all serious uses of force by SPD officers, also responded to the scene and would brief him.
“We will provide as much information as we can as it [the investigation] moves forward,” Jamieson said.
