King County Executive Dow Constantine has ordered an inquest into the fatal shooting of Che Taylor by two police officers in Seattle’s Wedgwood neighborhood.

Constantine announced the inquest Thursday after county prosecutors reviewed information on the case provided by the Seattle Police Department.

Che, 46, who was African American, was shot Feb. 21 after police say he failed to follow commands and reached for a handgun as officers tried to arrest him.

Taylor’s family and supporters have strongly questioned the police version of events and held a public demonstration shortly after the shooting.

In a statement released March 28, police said the investigation was continuing and the department had not reached any conclusions on the officers’ use of force.

The goal of an inquest is to determine the causes and circumstances surrounding a death in hearings conducted before a six-member jury. It is customary for deaths that involve on-duty law-enforcement officers.
