Auburn police are investigating a Sunday morning shooting outside of a King County Metro bus that left three children and one adult hurt, the Police Department said in a post.

Police found almost 100 shell casings south of the intersection in the 2900 block of M Street Southeast around 6:40 a.m. The shooting, according to police, appears to have been a planned ambush.

Surveillance video shows four masked people with handguns shooting at a group of five leaving a bus, police said.

Police say one of the people shot at also had a weapon and returned fire as they fled.

“It is believed that several of the suspects were using illegally modified pistols converted to full auto,” the post states.

Four of the five people shot at had non-life-threatening injuries.

King County Metro spokesperson Jeff Switzer called the shooting “shocking and unprecedented” in an email Tuesday. He said the bus was struck 12 times and is out of service for repairs. Metro Transit police will step up patrols in the area.

Those with information are asked to contact the Auburn Police Department tip line at 253-288-7403.
