The Renton Police Department said in a news release that three people were shot and injured while officers were trying to arrest a shooting suspect Friday evening.

Renton police and Valley SWAT members were trying to arrest the shooting suspect in the 16800 block of 116th Avenue Southeast shortly before 5:30 p.m. when “gunfire broke out,” the news release said.

Two people were taken to local hospitals and the person police were trying to arrest — a suspect in a Thursday night shooting that left an 18-year-old man in critical condition — was taken into custody, according to the news release.

King County’s Independent Force Investigative Team, a task force of detectives that responds when police use deadly force, is investigating the shooting. On Saturday, a spokesperson for the team confirmed someone fired at the officers, and SWAT team members returned fire, though they didn’t specify whose shots led to injuries.
