Seattle Public Schools began assigning students to neighborhood schools two years ago.
The Seattle School District’s new student-assignment plan, adopted two years ago, does not appear to have yet significantly decreased diversity at most city schools. The chart below compares the racial demographics of elementary- and middle-school students assigned under the new plan versus those assigned under the old plan. For example, with elementary schools we compared students in kindergarten and first grade (new plan) to students in grades 2 through 5 (old plan). A red arrow indicates a 10 percentage-point (or more) shift away from the district’s overall racial mix. A green arrow is a shift toward the district average. The blue bars show the increase in students attending their own neighborhood school.
