Firefighters battled an apartment-building fire near Northgate Mall on Saturday, as residents poured into the street after confronting smoke and flames. More than a dozen said they had not heard a fire alarm.
One firefighter received minor injuries
The fire at Park Meridian, a three-story building at North 113th Street and Meridian Avenue North, was reported about 2:20 p.m. There are about 35 units in building A, which was home to 60 to 70 people, records show.

Some described waking from naps to smoke-filled apartments and fire in the hallways. One woman said flaming debris fell from the roof when she stepped outside to investigate crackling noises. Many said they lost everything — including the cremated remains of one man’s brother — as they barely had time to escape.
The fire’s origin is not known.
