Ruben Van Kempen, a beloved drama teacher at Seattle’s Roosevelt High School, is calling it a career after 37 years — with the musical “Mary Poppins.”

Roosevelt’s production, which opened Thursday, comes complete with the nanny literally soaring above the stage, and includes the kind of song and dance routines that have become Van Kempen’s hallmark over the years. In “Step in Time,” for example, the cast tap-dances in triple time. Performances run through May 31.
