An email phishing scam may have compromised the private information of 786 Renton Technical College employees Friday.
The private information of nearly 800 Renton Technical College employees may have been exposed to an email phishing scam, and Renton police are investigating.
The scam happened Friday, when an employee responded to an email that appeared to be coming from the college president, Kevin McCarthy. The email requested W-2 information for all 786 employees, including faculty, staff and student workers.
The college staff later realized the email came from a commercial mail server not owned by or affiliated with the college. The incident was reported to Renton police and the FBI, and the college has offered to pay for credit-monitoring services for those affected.
