A Portland man was rescued Monday night after falling more than 70 feet while climbing a mountain near Snoqualmie Pass, according to the King County Sheriff’s Office.

The 64-year-old man and his girlfriend were climbing a peak called The Tooth when the man fell around 5 p.m., soon after removing his safety gear and helmet, the sheriff’s office said. The man suffered head, back, neck and leg injuries and had difficulty breathing.

Another group of climbers witnessed the fall and called 911.

Volunteers from Seattle Mountain Rescue and King County sheriff’s Search and Rescue hiked 4 miles to the victim. In addition, the sheriff’s rescue helicopter Guardian 2 was flown to the scene and lowered a Bellevue Fire Department medic and deputy 100 feet to the victim’s position.

The victim was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment of his injuries.
