A 14-year-old died on Tuesday night after authorities said he was shot by a friend while they were reportedly playing with a gun in a Burien home.

King County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sergeant Ryan Abbott said the shooting was about 8:20 p.m. at a house in the 12600 block of 12th Avenue South. First responders took the 14-year-old to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he died.

Abbott said the boy was shot by his 16-year-old friend in a “tragic accident.”

Investigators were interviewing witnesses, including the 16-year-old boy.

According to Abbott, the 16-year-old boy was believed to have been “recklessly handling” the firearm when it went off. He has been booked into the King County Juvenile Detention Center on investigation of manslaughter.

Abbott investigators are still trying to determine who owns the gun and how the teen got a hold of it.
