King County sheriff’s detectives are investigating a car explosion in Woodinville on Thursday morning and the death of a person who was found inside the vehicle, according to a department spokesman.

At 10:09 a.m., a witness called 911 and reported that a car in a parking lot in the 15500 block of Woodinville-Redmond Road Northeast had exploded and was engulfed in flames, sheriff’s Sgt. Ryan Abbott said.

A person was found dead inside the car, but Abbott said detectives don’t yet know if the person was a man or a woman. The King County Medical Examiner’s Office took custody of the body and will determine the person’s identity.

Detectives assigned to the sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit are leading the investigation, but Abbott said members of the sheriff’s bomb unit, bomb-detecting dogs and agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATM) also responded to the scene. The burned vehicle is being taken into evidence so detectives can determine what caused the explosion, Abbott said.
