WOODINVILLE — The Herbfarm Restaurant near Seattle has highlighted local ingredients for more than 25 years, so it was no surprise when kitchen staffers began raising their own hens.

KOMO-TV (is.gd/ZhGNDi) reports they started with six and planned to expand to 150. On New Year’s Day, they learned that local wildlife had a different plan.

Herbfarm owner Carrie Van Dyck said that despite a solar-powered electric fence, coyotes had gotten into the hen enclosure and killed nearly 100 of the birds. Only one forlorn chicken was left. Neighboring pigs and ducks were left untouched.

Van Dyck said round one went to the coyotes, but the staff is fixing the fence. Automatic closing doors will be installed on the coop. And the restaurant in the suburb of Woodinville will start over with its flock.
