The body of a skier who went missing above the Paradise area of Mount Rainier in mid-May was recovered by park rangers on Saturday, according to the National Park Service.

The woman was last heard from on May 18 before going on a ski tour above Paradise, the park service said in a news release. Park rangers began a search for the woman on May 19.

The news release says the woman fell an estimated 200 feet. Her body was recovered at the base of Pebble Creek’s Moraine Falls.

Search teams included rangers and volunteers. Patti Wold, a spokesperson for the park service, said the woman’s body was found within a day, but rescue teams were not able to recover her until June 8 due to dangerous weather.

“The area was surrounded by a large, unstable snow moat that was subject to rock and ice fall, which posed too high of an immediate risk to recovery teams,” the release states.

The woman’s body was located using traditional crevasse rescue methods and she was transported to the Pierce County medical examiner.
