Are you REAL ID compliant yet? The time is ticking, Seattle.
Per the 2005 REAL ID Act, starting May 7, anyone traveling by airplane or visiting certain federal facilities must use a REAL ID-compliant document. This includes passports, enhanced driver’s licenses and ID cards.
Congress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005, based on the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation for a national ID standard. Its goal is to enhance driver’s license and ID card reliability, and to prevent terrorists from using fraudulent identification.
The requirement was slated to go into effect years ago, but the deadline was repeatedly pushed. Now after 20 years in the making, it’s happening and Washington State Department of Licensing offices have been busy.
We want to hear about your experience if you recently got your ID, or —if you’re deadline driven like us — what struggles you’re running into as you try to get yours by May 7. If you’re waiting, tell us why.
Your responses are confidential to us, and we will not use your name or response in a story without your permission.
