Chris Pringer of Seattle bangs a drum as he walks through a traveling memorial of more than 1,600 markers on several acres at Green Lake yesterday.

The Arlington Northwest Memorial is intended to raise awareness of the cost of war in Iraq. Each marker represents one service member who has died.

The exhibit is maintained by two area groups — the Evergreen Peace and Justice Community and the local chapter of Veterans for Peace.

The city granted a one-day permit for yesterday’s exhibit, which will move to the border Peace Arch in Blaine on Memorial Day.

Pringer, a volunteer, said the drum represented the beating heart, symbolizing the connection shared by all people.
