Marine mammal experts are examining two dead whales that washed ashore on the Long Beach Peninsula in southwest Washington.

The stranding coordinator for Cascadia Research, Jessie Huggins, says the decomposed sperm whale was found Saturday and the gray whale calf on Sunday. They apparently washed ashore in stormy weather.

Sperm whales are typically far offshore. Gray whales migrate along the Washington coast, but this time of year most are in breeding waters off Mexico.
