CONWAY, Skagit County — One person was killed and five others were injured when a box truck hit multiple cars on Interstate 5 in Skagit County just after 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Traffic on the freeway was “stopped or traveling at a slow rate” in the area when the box truck failed to stop and hit several vehicles, according to a news release from Trooper Heather Axtman, a state patrol spokeswoman.
One driver died at the scene; several others who were injured were taken to a hospital, according to the release. WSP did not give the extent of the injuries to the five hurt, but all were expected to survive.
The crash blocked all southbound lanes near milepost 221, which is about 60 miles north of Seattle.
State transportation officials said the area had been reduced to one lane for a concrete rehab construction project.
Detectives are still investigating the crash. The State Patrol is asking witnesses to contact Detective Sgt. Jason Kraus at 360-870-4598 or firstname.lastname@example.org, or Detective Russ Haake at email@example.com or 425-401-7717.
