Readers Lens terms and conditions

  1. You must be a Washington state resident to submit a photo to The Seattle Times’ Reader’s Lens feature or our other photo contests. Selected photos will be featured in The Seattle Times newspaper and on Photos by professional photographers (a person whose occupation is photography and/or who earns a majority of his/her income as a photographer) are disqualified. A single photographer’s work is not eligible to be selected for the Seattle Times Reader’s Lens feature more than once every 90 days.
  2. By submitting a photo, you represent that the photo is your own work and you legally possess copyright.
  3. No purchase necessary to enter. Seattle Times photo contests are open to Washington state residents only and are void where prohibited by law.
  4. Employees and immediate family members (dependents under IRS rules), contractors, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising and promotional agencies of The Seattle Times are not eligible.

  6. For consideration for the year-end Reader Photos of the Year judging, the submission deadline will be in early December, with the exact date to be announced in the printed Seattle Times and on no later than a week prior to the cutoff.
  7. Reader Photos of the Year are chosen from photos selected and displayed in the Reader’s Lens photo feature throughout that prior year. Entries for Reader Photos of the Year judging must be received by the announced deadline in December. Winners in that judging will be selected by Seattle Times journalists and photography professionals, based on the quality of the image, around the second week of December. Winner need not be present to win. The grand prize winner will receive a gift card or certificate valued at $250 redeemable at a Seattle-area camera shop of the Seattle Times’ choosing. No cash equivalent or substitution of any prize is offered.
  8. To be eligible for the prize, the photographer must agree and be available to be featured in a Seattle Times article about how the winning photo was obtained.
  9. Winner of the Reader Photos of the Year judging will be notified, by phone or email, in or around the first week of January. Odds of winning depend on number of entries received.   10. Winner is responsible for all taxes and liabilities associated with the prize. The Seattle Times reserves the right to require any forms for eligibility and/or tax purposes within seven days of notification and prior to prize redemption. Noncompliance may result in disqualification and selection of an alternate winner. Contest entrants agree to abide by the terms of these official rules and by the decisions of the contest commissioners at The Seattle Times, which are final on all matters pertaining to the contest.
  11. By entering the Reader’s Lens, entrants grant The Seattle Times and contest sponsors the right to publish their submitted image in print, online and on social media in association with the contest. For all other purposes, the entrant maintains copyright for the image.
  12. The Seattle Times is not responsible for late, lost, or misdirected entries or any that lack sufficient postage; or any computer, online, telephone or technical malfunctions that may occur. Contest(s) can be canceled, terminated, modified or suspended at any time for any reason by the aforementioned company.
  13. Entrants agree to release The Seattle Times and all contest sponsors from any and all liability resulting from participation in the contest or use of any prize won. Entrants further consent to release to the aforementioned companies the use of each winner’s proper name, city, and state for purposes of advertising in any other media or trade in connection with the contest without further compensation. The aforementioned companies further reserve the right to use any and all information related to the contest, including information on contest entrants obtained through the contest, for marketing purposes or any other purpose, unless prohibited by law.
