The natural gym lighting at Chief Sealth High School. I had about a half hour to scope out the gym and set up for the portrait shoot.

We started under the net, I thought it might make a dramatic sort of shot–him going up to dunk and accentuating his height. I made a few frames there. Then I set up one light with a snoot fairly high and slightly to the side of the basket, with a couple of lights farther off to the side for extra fill.

It wasn’t quite as dramatic as I wanted it to read, so I moved to the opposite side of my lights and started shooting. The difference is shown above.

The photo used in print was one of the last “mock dunks” I had Hafid do and he went for a double-handed version that looked the most “dunk-like”.
