 If fitness trainer and coach Robel Woldu made an alarm clock, it would go off at 5 a.m. — not with a buzzer but with verbal commands, “come on, let’s go, let’s go, let’s go.”

There would be no snooze button.

Woldu played cornerback at College of the Redwoods in California and at the University of Minnesota, Crookston, and professionally with the New Orleans Voodoo in the Arena Football League.

Now 28, he remains a taut 5-feet, 10-inches and 180 pounds.

Rain or shine, three times a week, participants in his classes meet at Bobby Morris Playfield on Seattle’s Capitol Hill.

There are about 10 stations and only 30 seconds are spent at each one at a time.

That might sound easy, but it’s an intense workout designed to develop the body’s core.

There are battle ropes — heavy ropes attached to a fence, swung up and down in a rhythm to help with “developing shoulder blades, triceps, body core, abdominal area,” Woldu says. “The full range of arm motions.”

His students say those are the hardest. But, the weighted sled, the ladder and the parachute are not easy, either. Nor are the planks, physio balls or BOSU ball, a half-ball balance challenge.

Participant Elen Tesfamariam says she’s in because “I just want to be fit. Best thing is it’s taught by an athlete, not someone who is chubby. I trust it.”

The public session are $10 each or $40 for an unlimited month.

Woldu also conducts individual sessions with pro athletes.

The area native says his plan for life after football was to go into business for himself, “to believe in my vision for weight loss, conditioning and to create a lifestyle.”

After the one-hour workouts he gets a high-protein smoothie — banana, blueberries, maybe peanut butter.

His students head to their showers.
