Syttende Mai, or the 17th of May Festival, was celebrated in Ballard on Sunday with traditional food, children’s activities, live music and a parade. The annual Seattle event celebrates Norwegian Constitution Day, a national holiday in Norway.
Thousands turned out Sunday in Ballard to celebrate the Syttende Mai (Norwegian for “17th of May”), a festival that honors Norwegian Constitution Day. The festival included traditional food, children’s activities and live music, culminating in the big parade. Flags, costumes (the intricate formal wear is called a “bunad”), woolen sweaters and whimsical viking helmets came out of storage for the day. Ballard lays claim to the largest Syttende Mai celebration outside Norway.
