IN THE NEWS: The University of Washington, Washington State University and scores of other universities all across the United States are seeing their funding from the federal government imperiled as the Trump administration demands that they eliminate any form of racial preference in admissions or other aspects of academic life.

The spending freeze puts at risk research programs that boost future economic growth, technological innovation and advances in science and medicine. Apparently, the Trump White House is fine with that as long as they can halt the push for diversity, equity and inclusion on campuses — such DEI schemes being very broadly defined by them to include anything that helps disadvantaged students get a small boost toward a better life.
