“It is not enough to say ‘We must not wage war.’ It is necessary to love peace and sacrifice for it.” — Martin Luther King Jr.

These words were spoken for the Vietnam War but hold true on the brink of war with Iran more than 50 years later. Peace should be the only option because peace is the only way to ensure stability and safety. Peace will not cause food shortages, war will. Peace will not cause further economic instability in Iran, war will. War will beget more war because every soldier killed and every civilian maimed in senseless violence will only serve to embitter a people and strain relationships with a region already marred by decades of American aggression and bungled foreign policy.

Despite knowing that war will not secure a peaceful and stable future, our country’s leaders are bringing us closer to conflict. If war breaks out, they will claim that anyone who loves America will come to defend it. This is a lie. Anyone who loves America will choose peace. We must not fall prey to the old lie: Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori (It is sweet and right to die for one’s country).
