As reported in an item in The Seattle Times [July 28, Newsline], former President Donald Trump recently promised his evangelical Christian base that if he is reelected in 2024, things will be “fixed” so they “won’t have to vote anymore.”
I try not to let such thoughtless remarks get under my skin, but this one is particularly worrying. In this country, voting is every citizen’s right, a treasured privilege paid for by our predecessors with struggle, blood and grief. So, I’ve never felt like I have to vote; instead, I choose to vote.
I hope to exercise this fundamental right for the rest of my life because I can, not because I have to — especially this November.
