State Rep. Michelle Caldier is absolutely right. It is a shame that the University of Washington School of Dentistry is in the process of cutting valuable programs. As a nurse practitioner, I’ve seen how poor dental care affects patients. It adversely affects their general health and socioeconomic status, as well as causing pain. So I am sad to hear this news.

Why do you suppose the School of Dentistry is making these cuts? Surely it can’t be that the programs in question aren’t needed or wanted. Could there possibly be a lack of funding? Rep. Caldier, as a member of the state Legislature, is in a position to help this situation. I hope that she will be open to increasing funds for higher education, even if this means increasing taxes.
