Re: “Illinois abortion clinics brace for surge of patients with end of Roe” [June 30, Nation & World]:

I was touched by the photo in this article captioned “Kawanna Shannon, director of patient access at Planned Parenthood in Fairview Heights, leads a team that helps patients with flights, hotels, child care and more.”

I am writing this to praise case managers. I once volunteered as kitchen help for a downtown nonprofit and had a ringside seat to what they do. Their assignments begin on the phone, cobbling together a plan, some of it off the textbook, and sometimes sorting through the shards of someone’s ruined life.

There are few accolades, but if there is a heaven there will be a special place for them.
