The FYI Guy column about Seattle neighborhoods and growth refers to Seattle’s war on single-family zoning and, by extension, on single-family homes and their owners. The city wants to eliminate single-family zoning because it supposedly uses too much land. In the process, homeowners have been characterized as selfish, greedy or even racist, which is ridiculous.
The majority of people in the U.S. view the single-family home as the most desirable form of housing, especially for families. The U.S. Census Bureau shows about 60 percent of housing units being consistently single-family from 1940 to 2000, and the homeownership rate in the first quarter of 2018 at 64 percent.
Homeowners carefully choose neighborhoods based on location, price and stability, as would be expected when making the largest financial decision of one’s life. Homeowners spend decades taking risks, struggling to pay off mortgages, carefully maintaining and improving their homes, and generally trying to protect their largest and/or only investment.
No wonder they oppose the city’s unprecedented and reckless plan to play roulette with their neighborhoods, homes and life’s savings.
