Regarding the loss of the China market for our recyclables, it is shocking to me that we should spend precious resources to ship a resource overseas when it could be put to good use here at home.

Sweden has for many years burned its garbage to produce much-needed energy. It’s done cleanly with practically no toxic wastes. When I lived in Sweden, we recycled glass and metal. All else was collected in large containers heading for the furnace.

Burning garbage to produce energy is so successful that Sweden has to import garbage to keep the furnaces going, and only about 1 percent ends up in landfills.

Why not put our garbage to use in this win-win way?
