It is indeed a sad commentary on American civic engagement and responsibility that such a high percentage of eligible voters neglect to cast a ballot.
Apathy, laziness, distrust of politics and cynicism with the political culture surely all play a part in low participation rates.
The placing of drop boxes in King County and across the state is meant to make it easier for people to vote. But it is unlikely that investing $500,000 a year for additional drop boxes around the county will solve the problem.
Is it really too much to ask our fellow citizens to put a 49-cent stamp on a mail-in ballot and place it in a USPS mail box or leave it for their letter carrier to pick up?
