What’s “sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander” comes to mind following the leading Republican candidate’s statement that women should be punished for abortions [“Trump backtracks on question of punishing women for abortion,” Nation & World, March 31].
Women would not be facing a soul-wrenching problem if not for the men who made her pregnant. Whether or not the woman is punished, the man surely should be.
In our male-dominated political system, such a life-changing decision has been left to male elected officials. The woman’s decision has to be made in too many states without the family planning and prevention education that Planned Parenthood, for instance, provides.
Women should insist upon equal punishment. If the leading candidate’s foolish suggestion is followed, women, or their daughters or granddaughters, will pay by far the greatest price due to a male lack of preventive measures for himself and for not supporting his government to prevent pregnancy.
