“Puyallup Tribe, environmentalists protest liquefied-natural-gas plant” covers many reasons to protest about an LNG plant, and fueling and storage on the Tacoma Tideflats [Dec. 19, NWTuesday].
The details are important, but the big picture is that we must build an energy system that doesn’t destroy the natural world. Our current governance and economics privilege the fossil-fuel system. Our government gives subsidies to the fossil-fuel industries despite the overwhelming evidence that continuing to burn fossil fuels at the current rate will leave the planet far less habitable for humans and a lot of other species. As we continue to put resources into fossil-fuel systems, we are not developing energy infrastructure for renewables.
