Re: “Lessons from the burn zone: Why some homes survived the LA wildfires” (Jan. 17, Nation):

The article tells important details about the potential for avoiding the worst of rampant wildfires.

However, in addition to the tremendous compassion I have for those who have lost their homes and those who want to learn how to “harden” their home and landscape, I want to remind us all that there is more.

Getting at the underlying exacerbations of wildfires is a big part of what our strategies need to include: working to limit C02 in the atmosphere. Big, bold and brave legislation at the national and state levels is key. When we raise our voices loudly, effectively, and in great numbers, we can make a difference.

Nobody is exempt from the threat of fire danger. All of us can use our voices to call for strong legislation to get us off fossil fuels and support the transition to clean energy. Let our voices be as strong as the hurricane-force winds that have blown up so many California wildfires. We feel the urgency now more than ever.
