Re: “Biden steps aside as candidate, endorses Harris for president” [July 22, A1]:

I would like to thank President Joe Biden for making what must have been the most difficult decision of his political career.

I am sad for the president. He is a good and decent man, and deserved the opportunity to finish the work he was elected to do on our behalf.

I believe that history will judge Biden as one of the most consequential and successful presidents in American history, not only for his many legislative accomplishments while in office, but for the example that he set for future generations by making the decision not to continue to seek reelection.

By setting aside his own ego and pride, the president has shown us all what true patriotism looks like and reminds us that our leaders are first and foremost servants of the people.

By stepping down from his candidacy, Biden has fulfilled the central argument of his campaign, that the American president is elected to fight for the people, unlike former President Donald Trump, who has demonstrated time and again that he only fights for himself.
