I read with interest the article “Trump defends border policy as backlash grows” [June 19, A1]. I read these articles for information and facts. I still have not seen what changed in our immigration situation that caused the separating of these families, especially mothers from their children. Obviously, we have not been detaining children from moms for years now, and no one noticed.
I understand that members of the MS-13 gang are dangerous criminals, but 1) I have not read how much they contribute to American crime, and 2) I do not think my life is at risk from a 25-year-old mom and her 8-year-old son being together.
I get that they committed a crime by entering the country illegally. But, do we punish the child because the parent commits a crime?
