The idea of forgiving library fines for overdue articles is misguided. We are subtly telling children that avoiding rules is OK. We should never do this.

If we want to void the fine, which is admirable, it should happen only when an individual goes in person to a library and apologizes for returning an item late. Lacking that, the fine needs to stay in place.
