The National Security Agency’s metadata program — collecting your call data and that of everyone else in the country — did not foil or disrupt a single terrorist plot when it was in operation.

Reinstituting it, as guest columnist Slade Gorton suggests, would not contribute to our national security [“Better intelligence, strength needed to combat terrorism,” Opinion, Dec. 13]. We will not destroy the Islamic State by giving up our freedoms.
