The outrageous request of Seattle School Board president Leslie Harris that the city’s public schools be given time to get better should create fury in the poorer parts of this community.
I’d love to be in a room where Harris makes that request in front of angry disadvantaged parents whose children’s years are being lost, and disadvantage largely perpetuated, through being locked into those failing schools. At least charter schools give them demonstrable hope that their child won’t be lost to governmental failure to act.
Few remember that campaigner Barack Obama promised to strongly support charter schools. Of course, those promises were quickly forgotten, despite Democratic majorities in Congress.
