Can we stop taking everything so personally? In the absence of contradicting facts, why not assume the best about others? People who work with the public have to put up with a lot, and how are they supposed to know what will set someone off? Perhaps the cashier had been read the riot act by a previous customer to whom he didn’t offer a discount. I assume he was trying to be nice in offering monetary savings.

The bigger question is why is being taken for a senior offensive? Our culture values youth, especially in females. We are given the message that our primary worth is in being attractive to men: pretty, sexy, compliant and young, so being old implies being insignificant. If that message doesn’t align with your beliefs, you don’t have to buy into it. Claim the wisdom, expertise and experience that you have acquired over the years and be proud of your age.
