I feel the Legislature’s suggested solution is well-intentioned but needs a lot more work [“Legislature should reject plan to upend single-family zoning,” Jan. 26, Opinion]:
The housing market is like a roller coaster. There is no stability or security for the large percentage of renters. Midlevel and lower-income housing is a huge need, but as the analysis of Seattle’s Mandatory Housing Affordability legislation shows, developers will pay fees rather than provide truly affordable options, requiring the public sector to invest in fixed housing for those who can’t compete in this economy.
