The daily tweets and travesties of President Donald Trump have captured the attention of Seattle’s liberal voters almost to the point of blocking out everything else. Over coffee or at happy hour or at dinner parties or on the sidelines of kids’ soccer games, the talk is all Trump, except when it’s about which Democratic presidential candidate is most likely to beat Trump in the 2020 election.

This is a big distraction from a more imminent election, the 2019 vote for the city council and the school board. Both those governing bodies have direct and serious effects on the lives of the people living in this city. We all need to pay attention to local races in the coming weeks and remember to vote, not just in the November general election but in the August primary, where a notably big list of candidates will be on the ballot. And don’t worry, Trump’s zany White House reality show will still be going when this local campaign is over.
