Six ways to prep for holiday guests without redoing a whole room or calling a contractor.
Hosting guests can be daunting enough without trying to redecorate your space at the same time.
But you can provide a few extra comforts and stylish upgrades without redoing entire rooms or calling a contractor. Here are some quick ways to upgrade your space before the guests arrive.
Employ luxe colors and textures
Deep, rich jewel tones, and textiles like velvet and silk can make your home look a lot more luxe. Scatter Avery Velvet Pillows ($68–$78 at Anthropologie), in mix-and-match hues, around the living room for color and a pleasing texture.
Add plenty of seating
Create a social layout with ample seating so family and friends have a place to perch, snack and chat. Ottomans and poufs, such as the festive Hearth & Hand Pouf Square with Leather Handles ($60 at Target), can multitask as seating or side tables.
Let the light in
If you have a small space, natural light is your best friend. Maximize it by placing mirrors on opposite walls from your windows to reflect and spread the light and make the room look bigger. The O&G Salina Mirror (on sale for $279 at rejuvenation.com) functions as a room-opener and an elegant piece of wall art.
Layer in plants
Rather than cluttering surfaces with little decorative objects, add layers of interest with houseplants. You get a lot of design bang for your buck, and they look great in any style home. If you’re wary of caring for a plant, try a spider plant (prices vary at nurseries and home-improvement stores), which has beautiful foliage and needs little watering or tending.
Kill ’em with comfort
No matter the size of your space, guests will have a good time if they’re comfortable (and maybe also well-fed). Cozy up in the Fireside Faux Fur Throw Blanket ($98 at Anthropologie), available in five décor-matching colors, then send them to bed on the Sleep Number PlushComfort Ultimate Pillow (on sale for $48 through Dec. 24 at sleepnumber.com), which has three inserts that can be added or removed to create the perfect-sized pillow, just for them.
Accent your bathroom
After getting it sparkling clean, add a couple new accessories to your bathroom. Aesop Resurrection Aromatique Hand Wash ($39 at Aesop stores), with scents of mandarin, rosemary and cedar, is a pleasure to use and to look at. And interior designers laud the simple towels at Target, so providing fresh, white hand towels won’t break the bank.
