It’s that time again: When teens and tweens try to achieve that delicate balance between finding what everyone else is wearing, so they fit in, and what no one else is wearing, so they stand out.

To help with the back-to-school shopping hunt, we’ve rounded up some promising trends, necessities and fun extras to help you start the new year in style.

Skinny mini

Skinny jeans remain a staple of the teen wardrobe. For him, Hot Topic’s Raw X Burgundy Moto Skinny Jeans ($50) add a bit of color and texture for a sophisticated edge, while the H&M Boys’ Biker Pants with Knee Patches ($30) have an urban feel with slim-fit stretch twill and an elastic waist to keep up with his growth spurts.

For her, the Treasure & Bond Distressed Skinny Overalls ($43 at Nordstrom though Aug. 6, then $65) make for a super-easy outfit with a tee underneath, and then a flannel over top come fall.

Bright ideas

Don’t be shy — bold, bright colors are right on-trend this year. The Toca Boca Pullover ($17) is part of Target’s new collaboration with the popular kids’ app, and makes a statement in eye-catching neon orange with contrasting white plus signs.

For a splash of sparkle, Justice’s Sequin Bomber Jacket ($35 at shopjustice.com) combines shimmery peach sequins with a gray-heather jacket to dress up any outfit.

For him, the colorblocked Primitive Nuevo Navy & Red Blocked Pullover Hoodie ($70 at zumiez.com) adds pop to the wardrobe staple without going over the top. Younger boys will find it’s easy being green in Gap’s Graphic Long Sleeve Baseball Tee (on sale for $14) with contrasting navy sleeves.

Pops of personality

Have a teen with attitude? Let them show off their cheeky side with artist David Olenick’s Snide Effects Tee ($24), which says “This is how eye roll” above the eye roll emoji. Or make ’em smile with the punny Abandoned Chip Tee (“This is guacward”) ($19–$24, both at society6.com). The original designs are printed on 100 percent jersey cotton with 13 available color choices.

Zara’s Printed Leggings ($13) have a graffiti feel with paint splatters and the word “love” down the leg. Pair them with the clever Bomber Shirt with Detachable Lining ($46, both at zara.com), which has a removable striped shirt lining, for an instant outfit for fall.

Girls in junior high and high school are still rocking cat ears. Combine the look with the pretty pastel trend with Hot Topic’s Pastel Plastic Cat Ear Headband Set ($6 for three) in pink, lavender and mint.

A new school year is the time to put your best foot forward. Kids of all ages will eat up the splashy ramen design on Sock It to Me’s Ra-Man! Socks ($11.50–$12 at Sock Monster, Wallingford, and sockittome.com), brand-new for fall from the Oregon company.

Step it up

Fresh kicks can make an outfit. The Converse x Woolrich Chelsee CTAS Hi Black & Yellow Buffalo Plaid Shoes ($45 at zumiez.com) stand up to wet weather with rubber soles, warm wool and a sporty look that goes equally well with jeans, tights or skirts.

More preppy types will take a shine to the BP. Kali Flat ($60 at Nordstrom), which updates the classic loafer with silver leather and a chic, pointy toe.

For guys, the UO Stacked Crepe Sneaker Boot ($129 at urbanoutfitters.com) is a modern hybrid that will keep pace through fall and winter, combining a suede high top with a grippy textured sole.

And Vans x Peanuts Old Skool Charlie Brown Sneakers ($70 at vans.com) mix a classic skate shoe with the iconic vintage artwork from Charlie Brown’s shirt and the words “good grief” on the tongue. Maybe they will even give him the courage to talk to that little red-haired girl.
