Summer is so close that you can close your eyes and envision yourself on a beach. Hear the waves crashing? Smell that salt air? Feel that warm breeze?

Not quite? Well, perhaps if you turn a room of your home into one reminiscent of a beachside cabana, your imagination will kick in.

Here are some items to help you get into that island mood and create a beach-style bedroom in your home.

BRING THE OCEAN INSIDE

Begin your quest for a tropical haven by shopping for linens that set the tone. Look for light colors with nautical accents, such as seashells, starfish or boats. As one of the largest items in the room, a beachy comforter will really set the theme for the whole bedroom. For a more subtle approach, opt for themed sheets or a throw.

SEASIDE GLOW

A lamp is a great place to bring in hints of the sea: think rope, shells, coral or fishing nets. The smaller size allows you to bring in ambiance without being overbearing. Check children’s stores or mass retailers for versions that won’t break the bank.

SAND SCENES

Sometimes, all it takes is a little touch to put you in the tropical mood. If you don’t want to replace all your linens, new throw pillows can provide an inexpensive update. Swap out the set that came with your comforter, or add extras to the bed or around seating areas. Abstract graphic prints can keep the theme from becoming too on the nose.

MAKE TROPICAL SCENTS

The sense of smell is powerful. Add beachy aromas, such as coconut, melon, sea salt and grasses via room mist or a scented candle. Plus, the romantic glow of a candle will add even more to your island fantasies.
