CareerCast.com has pulled together a list of jobs that it says, rather harshly, are “fading into obscurity.”

The site’s Most Endangered Jobs Top 10, with projected growth outlook through 2024 and median annual income:

Mail carrier (-28 percent projected growth outlook through 2024, $56,790 median annual income)

Typist/word processor (-18 percent, $37,610)

Meter reader (-15 percent, $38,510)

Disc jockey (-11 percent, $30,080)

Jeweler (-11 percent, $37,060)

Insurance underwriter (-11 percent, $65,040)

Seamstress/tailor (-9 percent, $25,830)

Broadcaster (-9 percent, $37,720)

Newspaper reporter (-8 percent, $36,360)

Computer programmer (-8 percent, $79,530)

CareerCast blames automation/technology and industry consolidation for the projected declines in most of the roles.

Other contributing factors include outsourcing to other countries (programming in particular), changing habits of consumers (affecting jewelers and tailors) and the loss of advertising revenue (newspaper reporters).
