DIGITAL MEDIA PRODUCER
Jini Palmer

What do you do? I am the digital media producer at Town Hall Seattle. I edit the recorded audio from our Town Hall events and post it on our media library or on one of our four podcast feeds: Arts & Culture, Civics, Science and our new curated podcast with myself and Steve Scher called “In The Moment.”

How did you get started in that field? Video and A/V tech has been my professional emphasis for years but my attention has recently turned to podcast production. In college I volunteered for KRCL’s youth radio program “Loud and Clear” and in the spring of 2016 I interned for KNKX’s podcast “Sound Effect,” which included helping them with a live production of “A Friend In Need” at Town Hall. This live event led to my friend Edward Wolcher, Town Hall’s curator of lectures, recommending this job to me. It was the perfect fit because they wanted someone to produce podcasts and videos and I wanted to make them!

What’s a typical day like? My day usually starts with a cup of joe, some lighthearted banter with co-workers, and then I dive into editing audio. I listen to our recent Town Hall talks, write and record podcast scripts, update our website and have the pleasure of choosing my favorite segments for “In The Moment.” I then go home to take our new pup, Shadow, on a walk, relax with the hubby, and if I’m lucky, end the day strumming a few notes on my guitar.

What’s the best part of the job? My co-workers (they are wonderful), producing “In The Moment,” and having the opportunity to work with Steve Scher. I get to listen to almost all of our Town Hall events, which are broad in scope and quite informative, and so I feel very fortunate to be in a role where I’m constantly learning.

What surprises people about what you do? People tend to be surprised when I tell them that I produce nearly everything for all four podcasts. I edit the audio, write the scripts, choose the clips, record the narration and co-host “In The Moment.” It has been a great growth opportunity for me. Shameless plug: You should listen to our new Town Hall podcast “In the Moment”! I invite you to learn with me and would love to hear your feedback.
