DIRECTOR OF LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT
What do you do? My official title is director of learning and development at Zillow Group; however, the day-to-day work is broader than that. I manage a team of three people (two in Seattle and one in San Francisco), and together, we get the privilege of putting together the learning programs, development programs and culture activities for our company. We want our employees to be successful and happy in their roles each day, and we provide the resources to help them do that.
How did you get that job? I’ve always had a passion for people, how they learn and develop, and maintaining a great culture at a workplace. All of these are key factors in the success of an organization. When I learned of this job opening at Zillow, I was very excited and felt it was a great fit for where I wanted my career to move. My past experience had been more on the compensation side of the HR world, and this was a great new challenge for me to take on.
What’s a typical day like? Ha! There is no typical day. At Zillow, we “Move Fast and Think Big” (one of our core values). My team gets involved in a variety of company events, including a personal branding class, partnering with Recruiting to put together interview training, launching our employee SWAG store and helping plan our holiday party for our 2,000-plus employees. I even got to meet (Seattle Seahawk) Cliff Avril, who came in to speak to our employees last October as part of our Zillow Group Speaker Series. No two days are alike, and that’s why I love it.

What surprises people about what you do? I think what surprises people is how many different programs my team is involved in. Since we work on the culture side as well, the programs we get to work on are varied, and we get involved in the employee experience on many levels. Also, most people don’t know that L&D didn’t exist at Zillow before I started here in 2013. It’s been exciting to have the support of the leadership team at Zillow to grow this function and keep evolving it based on the needs of the company and employees.
What’s the best part of the job? The best part of my job is to see how the programs my team is putting into place are helping shape the company and the culture. We get to work with individual employees to help them develop in their own career, and put the entire company through Insights training to help create a common language across teams. It’s really rewarding when you see employees who are grateful and happy to come to work every day.
