Bodrum Bistro brings the flavors of Turkey to a charming storefront in Wallingford.

Stroll into Bodrum Bistro, and you feel surrounded by family. Actually, those oversized vintage portraits represent the relations of Sedat Uysal (also proprietor of Pioneer Square’s Paloma Cafe). And the delectable, affordable cuisine served here is reminiscent of what’s on the menu in the pretty seaside town of Bodrum, in Uysal’s native Turkey. A great addition to Seattle’s thriving Eastern Mediterranean restaurant scene, his newest establishment serves up some Turkish delights we haven’t found elsewhere locally.

The menu: Veggies are used generously and rewardingly here. An assortment of mezzes, or appetizers ($5-$8 each, or sample four for $14) include such delicacies as a mound of sautéed carrots and onions with pine nuts and cumin ($7), and crunchy red lentil patties in lettuce ($8). All are scooped up with hunks of warm bread.

The filling “big plates,” each served with a side of well-dressed greens, range from an excellent falafel platter ($12), to a fried eggplant-tomato dish over rice ($14) to the priciest choice, a tender lamb and vegetable kebab ($17). Among the daily specials are various kinds of pide, the yeasted flat bread with toppings that is Turkey’s popular answer to pizza.

What to write home about: The plate of zucchini-feta-scallion pancakes, topped by a dollop of thick yogurt ($13), lingers in the memory, as does the chicken-walnut-pear-feta (yum) phyllo pie ($16), a savory bundle hefty enough to share. Another Turkish staple to try: the manti, homemade beef dumplings bathed in a creamy garlic-yogurt sauce ($15).

The setting: Cozy, dimly lit and (if the mood hits you) romantic, with very friendly service and a warm greeting from the gracious owner.

Summing up: An evening’s dinner for two of a four-meze sampler ($14), a zucchini pancakes plate ($13) and a chicken phyllo pie plate ($16) came to $43, before tax and tip.
